A comprehensive rebrand for the Malta Biennale, spanning strategy, identity, digital and campaign design to establish a confident and enduring cultural presence.
The Malta Biennale required a brand identity that could stand confidently alongside global cultural institutions while remaining deeply connected to Malta’s artistic and historical legacy. The identity needed to feel authoritative and institutional, yet expressive enough to evolve with future editions of the Biennale.
The challenge was to strike a careful balance between heritage and modernity. The brand had to avoid trend-driven aesthetics while remaining contemporary, adaptable and recognisable across print, digital and environmental applications. It needed to communicate credibility, artistic authority and cultural depth to both local and international audiences.
We worked closely with the team at Heritage Malta, developing a multi-layered identity system grounded in strategic contrast. Through research into Maltese cultural iconography and institutional branding, we redefined the Biennale’s visual and sonic language to honour tradition while pushing it into a modern creative sphere.
At the core is a refined visual system combining heritage-inspired colour palettes with contemporary design principles. Custom cultural motifs, drawn from Maltese archaeological figures, were developed as recurring anchors throughout the identity. A flexible two-tier logo system and structured typography hierarchy ensure consistency and adaptability across formats and future editions.
Extending the brand beyond visuals, we introduced a bespoke sonic identity developed in collaboration with a sound designer. This added a multi-sensory dimension to the Biennale, creating recognisable audio signatures across events, digital platforms and promotional material.
The identity was further brought to life through a redesigned website that reflects the updated visual language and delivers a clearer, more premium digital experience.
The result is an authoritative and enduring cultural brand that positions the Malta Biennale as a modern artistic institution, rooted in Maltese heritage yet confidently international in outlook.
